By Charles Jackson Jr

Dr. Aquil Basheer was revered as a beacon of hope and an inspiring leader within the Los Angeles community. On Sunday, March 8th, many gathered at the Beehive on 61st Street—a lively local venue—to pay tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of The Commander, Dr. Aquil Basheer.

The event drew a diverse crowd of hundreds, including community leaders, firefighters, law enforcement personnel, family members, and dear friends, all united in their affection and respect for a man who dedicated his life to uplifting others. This heartfelt gathering was not just a memorial but a celebration of a life filled with purpose and impact.
A notable lineup of civic and religious dignitaries took to the stage, sharing moving anecdotes and tributes that highlighted Dr. Basheer’s profound influence. Among those who spoke were Nation of Islam Minister Tony Muhammad, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, LA Councilmember Monica Rodriguez, Compton Mayor Emma Sharif, and Compton City Councilman Jon Bowers, each reflecting on their experiences with Dr. Basheer and the indelible mark he left on their lives. Former Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas also joined in to honor his legacy.

Dr. Basheer, a former firefighter himself and the proud son of Los Angeles County’s first Black firefighter, epitomized commitment, excellence, courage, and transformative leadership. Once a member of the Black Panthers, he fiercely advocated for his community’s safety and well-being. In 1989, he founded BUILD, a groundbreaking community violence intervention program that trained over 35,000 individuals across 127 cities and forged the nation’s first credentialing program for violence intervention specialists. Additionally, he established the Professional Community Intervention Training Institute (PCITI), further expanding his vision for a safer society.

Dr. Aquil Basheer is survived by his loving wife, Latifah Basheer; his sister, Thelma Davis Martin; and his cherished children, Halimah Basheer, Amir Basheer, and Lameece Basheer-King. He also leaves a legacy of love through his grandchildren, other relatives, and countless friends who were touched by his unwavering spirit and dedication.
In a poignant continuation of her father’s life’s work, his daughter, Halimah, has stepped into his shoes, taking on the leadership role at BUILD/PCITI, ensuring that his mission and values live on.
