Black History Month Brings Compton Community Together

Honored at Black History Month EventCity Pride Magazine’s Black History Month Lifetime of Excellence Awards Gala was an outstanding night of sharing, caring, and entertainment. Several people were honored for their lifetime of commitment to working in the Los Angeles and Compton communities. Honorees included Stevie Wonder and102.3 KJLH, represented by Guy Black, Don Buford, Doug Takarakawa, Mollie Bell, Joyce Kelly, Mustafa Khan, Judge Kelvin Filer, and Larry Walls, who Cassandra Walls represented. Compton Mayor Emma Sharif and Councilman Jonathan Bowers made presentations for the City of Compton. The dazzling Diamond Singers performed superbly and gave an astounding musical tribute to Stevie Wonder.

Don Buford and Doug Takaragawa of ESI were well represented, with students, teachers, coaches., administrators, and sponsors who were there to support them. Coach George Hinshaw, Coach Kim, CUSD Board of Trustees President Denzel Perry, and CUSD Senior Director of Special Programs Ja Maiia Bond expressed gratitude. ESI also awarded Ms Bond for her work in the community and the great sports programs she is directing.
