MAGGIE HATHAWAY GOLF COURSE OPENS IN SOUTH LA

South Los Angeles County golf course, driving range, and practice areas will open to the public

The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation (LA County Parks), in partnership with The Maggie Junior Golf and Community Foundation and American Golf, held a ceremony to open the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course’s fairways, driving range, and practice areas on March 27, 2026.

The golf course’s clubhouse facilities will be completed in the winter, after which LA County Parks and its partners will celebrate the fully refurbished golf course with a grand opening ceremony. The March 27 event is a soft opening to allow access to the public as soon as possible while construction continues.

Maggie Hathaway Golf Course, an 11-acre course at 9637 S. Western Avenue, Los Angeles, now boasts a completely renovated Par 3 course by the renowned firm Hanse Golf Course Design. The existing driving range was reimagined from 9 to 18 stalls and reversed to improve accessibility, along with enhanced practice areas for putting and chipping. These much-needed improvements were enhanced by sustainability elements, including water-efficient turf varieties, a new computer-controlled irrigation system linked to an on-site weather station, and new landscaping designed to reduce water use.

The facilities construction phase, currently underway, will include a clubhouse, offices, community room, and a public art exhibit that will tell the history of Maggie Hathaway and the course.

On October 8, 2024, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved an investment of $7.8 million from the 2024-2025 Supplemental Budget for the Maggie Hathaway Renewal Project. To date, The Maggie Junior Golf and Community Foundation has raised more than $11.5 million and continues to raise funds. The entire project cost is estimated at $21 million.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, who represents the South Los Angeles community where the golf course is located at Los Angeles County’s Jesse Owens Park, shared, “The newly improved Maggie Hathaway Golf Course stands as a powerful tribute to its namesake, a trailblazer who made the sport of golf more inclusive and a fierce advocate for racial justice. With a nearly $8 million investment from Los Angeles County—paired with generous philanthropic support—we have not only rejuvenated the beauty of this space, but also, through programs and ongoing partnerships, ensured that communities that don’t often see themselves represented in golf feel welcomed and included. I look forward to residents of South Los Angeles and surrounding communities enjoying this public golf course and all it has to offer for generations to come.”

“LA County Parks prioritized reopening the golf course as soon as possible so the public could enjoy the fairways. Construction on the remaining facilities will continue while the course is open, and we look forward to fully opening the course later this year,” said Norma E. García-González, Director of Los Angeles County Parks.  “It’s important to LA County Parks that youth in our golf programs experience a premier, world-class golf course every time they step onto the fairway.”

“The Maggie Hathaway Golf Course renovation has been an extraordinary experience, bringing together public/private partnerships to build community and enrich our young people through the sport of golf,” shared Fred Terrell, The Maggie Junior Golf and Community Foundation Chairman and Vice Chairman of Investment Banking at Wells Fargo.

The soft opening ceremony, marking a momentous occasion for the community, the county, and the sport of golf, was commemorated by an opening tee shot by dignitaries of the project and invited junior golfers. The course will NOT be open for play after the ceremony, but there will be activations at the practice putting green and driving range, and attendees will be able to take walking tours of the course. The course opened to the public on Saturday, March 28.
