CUSD Board of Trustees Choose New Centennial High School Design by DLR Group

In a landmark decision that promises to reshape the educational landscape of the local community, the Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees was thrilled to select the architectural design for the new Centennial High School. Chosen from a competitive field of six submissions, the winning design was selected last Saturday and comes from the acclaimed architectural firm DLR Group, known for their innovative approach to educational spaces.

“We’re excited to select the DLR Group for the design of the new Centennial High School,” said CUSD Board President Denzell Perry. “They presented a bold, aspirational, and modern design that complements the look of the new Compton High School, while capturing the history and legacy of Centennial. This project signifies the Compton Unified Board of Trustees’ long-term vision and commitment to our district and community, creating state-of-the-art new schools that will elevate our scholars and city to all-new levels.”

“This signifies a continued fulfillment of the educational excellence for Compton Unified School District that we started seven years ago with Compton High School, and we are so looking forward to pushing this city to be the premier destination for education in the world,” said Jesse Miller, DLR Group K12 Education Leader. “With these two, brand-new high schools that are coming online, you’d be hard pressed to find a community and district that has invested so much into making sure their scholars have every opportunity to excel in the ever-changing world.”

Construction of the new Centennial High School will begin in the coming years, funded by Bond Measure AAA that was voted on and approved by Compton voters by a resounding 71 percent in November 2022.

“Not only do our students need state of the art facilities in which to learn, they deserve them,” said CUSD Board of Trustees Clerk Micah Ali. “It is our moral imperative to provide them. These bold moves forward – first Compton High School, now Centennial High School – make me incredibly proud of the Compton voters who have made this possible.”

The selection marks a significant milestone in the district’s efforts to upgrade its educational facilities and foster an environment that inspires students, faculty, and the community at large. The architectural vision transcends mere structures, it embraces the very essence of the community’s identity. The design aspires to be more than a physical space, it is a crescendo of aspirations, an immersive experience that illumines the path to self-discovery and collective growth.

Building the new Centennial will follow completion of the newly constructed Compton High School, which is set to open in 2025.

Compton Unified is committed to upgrading its facilities and will have two of the newest, state-of-the-art high schools in California by 2030.
