NATIONAL INNOVATIVE COMMUNITIES CONFERENCE 2024, HELD IN RIVERSIDE

Dr. Yusef Salaam was a keynote speaker at the National Innovative Communities Conference in Riverside. Best known as one of “The Central Park Five,” they were wrongfully convicted of rape by the NYPD in 1989.

The annual convention, organized by Reach Out, focused on regional innovation and improving the quality of life in local communities nationwide. This year’s theme was “Real Change Starts Here,” highlighting the impact of local leaders and engaged citizens on critical decisions about schools, health, the environment, arts, and culture. The conference provided an opportunity for organizations to share resources and learn about the services offered by various organizations.

Dr. Yusef Salaam spoke at the conference on Tuesday, June 11th, empowering and encouraging the audience. After spending years in prison, the “Exonerated Five” saw their convictions vacated in 2002 when the actual rapist confessed. Salaam, who was 15 when he was sentenced, now advocates for equal justice and serves as a City Councilman for New York City’s 9th District.

Dr. Victor Rios, the MacArthur Foundation Chair and Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, also spoke at the conference. He discussed his experiences growing up and his work with youth programs, having turned his life around from homelessness and incarceration as a youth in Los Angeles.

The conference’s well-organized workshops provided valuable information and resources, making it a worthwhile event. City Pride magazine will feature more details on the participating organizations and their services.
